We’re thrilled to share our collaboration with Baronfig, a brand renowned for thoughtful design and tools that elevate the analog experience. We sat down with Joey, CEO & Founder of Baronfig, to talk about the inspiration behind the Squire Hex Pen and the shared design values that brought our collaboration to life.
About the Pen
The Squire Hex Pen is a signature Baronfig design. Can you tell us a bit about the story and inspiration behind it?
Baronfig started as a notebook company. When customers shared our notebooks online, they were always photographed with a pen—but it wasn’t ours. That sparked the idea to design one ourselves, with the same attention to material and detail as our notebooks.
People laughed at first, saying, “You can’t do that! You’re the notebook people!” But we went ahead anyway. When New York Magazine named our Squire Pen the #1 pen out of 100—essentially the best pen in the world—we were never questioned again. The Squire Hex is an evolution of that original design.
Can you share what makes the Squire Hex Pen unique in terms of materials and construction?
Our Squire pens take a minimalist approach. Each pen is cut from a single block of aerospace-grade aluminum and has as few moving parts as possible. The goal is to create a beautiful object that inspires focus, rather than getting in the way. It’s a pen that blends seamlessly into your workflow while standing out as a thoughtfully crafted tool.
How do Baronfig and Appointed’s shared principles of timeless, functional design show up in this pen?
A good pen feels at home in the hand, glides effortlessly across the page, and is built to last a lifetime. The Squire Hex achieves all of these goals—beautiful yet functional, encouraging deliberate engagement with your work.
Design Philosophy
What kind of writing experience did you want the Squire Hex Pen to deliver?
We wanted it to feel natural and effortless. The pen should feel like an extension of your hand, gliding across the paper, while also serving as a long-lasting, inspiring tool.
In what ways does the Squire Hex Pen encourage a more intentional approach to work and creativity?
The Squire draws in people who take pride in their analog work. Whether it’s note-taking, brainstorming, or sketching, the pen is a high-quality tool for high-quality thinking. Holding it is a reminder to slow down, focus, and do your best work.
Workflow & Creative Process
Do you have a favorite Appointed product or way you personally use our tools?
The Wall Calendar, of course! It aligns perfectly with our design philosophy: minimal, beautiful, functional. It’s a daily joy to engage with, and having it on display makes planning and organization effortless.
Are there any lessons or philosophies that guide how you approach work at Baronfig?
Less is more. There are a few “top secret” design principles we follow, but at the heart, simplicity and intentionality drive everything we do.
What’s inspiring you right now?
My family!
