Meet Our 2022 D.C. Workbook Recipient: Live It Learn It

Today we’re taking a closer look at our newest D.C. Workbook recipient, Live It Learn It, a local non-profit that provides carefully-crafted experiential learning units to students in D.C.’s traditionally under-resourced communities. Your purchase champions and empowers D.C. students, but the support doesn’t need to end there—read on for more ways to donate and get involved.

What is the D.C. Workbook?

In 2016, we decided to launch the Appointed Gives Back Program with our very first D.C. Workbook supporting Story Of Our Schools. Since then, this program has expanded year after year to include limited-edition notebooks, workbooks, journals, and notepads—each benefiting a unique organization striving to make a difference in our own backyards.

The D.C. Workbook has remained the flagship product of this collection, as we parter with a new youth-focused Washington-area organization each calendar year. We are proud to partner with Live It Learn It for 2022, and can’t wait to see how your support of this product can deliver even more resources, experiences, and opportunites to kids in our very own neighborhoods.

About Live It Learn It

Net proceeds of this journal suport LILI in their mission to empower & motivate all learners regardless of race, zip code, or socio-economic background. Partnering with D.C.’s Title I schools and the area’s treasured museums, landmarks, and environmental sites, LILI help students engage on-site with the world around them.

Whether it’ a 3rd grade class discovering native species and chain reactions on the Anacostia River, or a 5th grade class creating their own self portraits after learning about symbolism at the National Portrait Gallery, the curriculum has been developed closely with educators at partner sites to deliver engaging activities that are interdisciplinary, age-appropriate, and aligned to Common Core standards.

Let’s take a closer look at how LILI achieves this goal through their mission and model:

"1. Partnerships with Title I schools: We offer our exceptional programs to students who need them the most—those in high-poverty schools that often lack the resources to provide experiential learning opportunities.

2. Rigorous three-part learning model: Each Live It Learn It experience consists of a pedagogically sound learning loop—extensive preparation, intensive experience, and guided reflection—to ensure that students get the most out of every program.

3. Engaging curricular materials: For each of our twenty-five programs, our staff has developed rich, detailed curricular materials that are interdisciplinary, age-appropriate, and aligned with Common Core standards.

4. Transformative effect on teachers: Partner teachers see firsthand the powerful effect that our experiential learning programs have on their students, and are often inspired to incorporate more active learning into their daily lessons.

5. Emphasis on rigor and engagement: We understand that children learn best when they are highly motivated, so our programs are designed to challenge students while inspiring joy and excitement."
